Help save county LOOP bus service, stop fare hikes-- with new "Super LOOPer" discount card project...

Hi all...

To his credit, last month at a joint meeting of our County Legislature's Budget, Finance, and Personnel and Environmental committees, our county's Planning Commissioner Roger Akeley actually stated that my idea for some sort of a new "Super LOOPer" discount card at local stores and restaurants (for heavy county LOOP bus users) was not a bad one...

[note-- if you own such a business and are interested in this, contact me asap-- on my cell at 489-5479...(building list!)]

Such a win-win program might go something like this-- local businesses might provide a 5% (or bigger) discount on products and/or meals sold at their establishments-- in exchange for the free publicity that would come from having their names listed on the new "Super LOOPer" discount card...(building and expanding on the success of the current monthly passes described below-- monthly $35 "commuter pass" and monthly $52 "ride-anytime" pass)...

Hopefully this might lead to more Dutchess County residents participating in our county's LOOP bus system and riding the buses more frequently-- thus bringing in more revenue (possibly preventing raising of bus fares and/or elimination of various routes as proposed below)...

For example, I for one (along with fellow Clinton resident Ken Krauer) would really prefer that LOOP route 7 not be eliminated-- it's the only one that goes through the Town of Clinton here where I live-- currently LOOP 7 bus has two morning runs and one afternoon run on same route from Pine Plains through Clinton to Poughkeepsie, stopping at Clinton Corners (Co. Rt. 13/17), Salt Point (Clinton Hollow Rd./Salt Point Tpk.), Clinton Hollow (Hollow Rd./Co. Rt. 14/Browning Rd.), Pleasant Plains Church (Fiddler's Bridge Rd./Hollow Rd./Co. Rt. 14)-- and one morning and one afternoon run from Poughkeepsie through Clinton to Pine Plains (stopping at same four places).....(others wish to preserve southern routes)...

[the more letters sent to countylegislators@co.dutchess.ny.us on this the better-- sooner than later!]

Finally-- if you didn't know, the Dutchess County Department of Planning and Development is holding a crucial public hearing on proposed changes to our county's LOOP bus system (including dropping many routes, unfortunately)-- tomorrow (Thurs.) Jan. 8th 7 pm at the Farm and Home Center on Rt. 44 in Millbrook (postponed due to bad weather today from being originally planned for tonight)...

Again-- if you own a restaurant, store, or other business and would like to make a "Super LOOPer" discount card reality, building and expanding the current monthly $35 "commuter pass" and monthly $52 "ride-anytime" pass, let me know!...

[pass it on]

Recall this from the front page of the Poughkeepsie Journal Nov. 21st:

"LOOP Fare May Skyrocket" by Jenny Lee-Adrian
http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/article/20081121/NEWS01/811210338/-1/comm03

In January, 10 weekday routes and three Saturday LOOP bus routes could be eliminated, as well as the restructuring of two routes. Eliminating and restructuring routes could affect 200 people, Akeley said in his presentation to a joint meeting of the Legislature's budget and environment committees Thursday...Legislature Chairman Roger Higgins, D-New Hamburg, did not favor fare increases. "Unfortunately, the neediest of our population relies on that bus system," he said. "If we can avoid that, I think we should"...Among the measures to avoid increasing Dutchess County property taxes is a plan to raise Dutchess County LOOP bus standard fares 75 percent and reduce the number of routes. The plan is part of Dutchess County Executive William Steinhaus' 2009 $395.7 million budget the county Legislature is considering. Standard fares could increase from $1 to $1.75 per zone, according to county Planning and Development Commissioner Roger Akeley. Fares for seniors, people with disabilities, children who are 5 to 12 years old and students could increase from 50 cents to 75 cents.

Fares, Passes & Other Transportation Services

Monthly $52 Ride-Anytime Pass

This Pass is designed for frequent riders of the Dutchess County LOOP Bus System. The Monthly Ride Anytime Pass is valid on all buses and at all times during the calendar month of issue. An easy way to determine if this is the right Pass for you is to count the number of times you normally ride the LOOP bus in any calendar month. If you ride more than 60 times during the month then this is the Pass for you. Remember, every time you change buses counts as one ride. Handicapped patrons receive a 50% discount on this Pass.

Monthly $35 Commuter Pass

This Pass is designed for those individuals that commute back and forth during normal commuter hours. The Pass is valid from 4 a.m. through 9 a.m. and again 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. This pass is also good on all buses in the LOOP bus system during the restricted days and hours.
